FAQ´s

WHAT TYPE OF CAMPERVAN IS SILVER FOX?

Silver Fox is a standard right-hand drive T2 Bay window VW Camper, with a 5-shift manual gearbox. It’s based on the original 1970’s model although it was built in 2011 in Brazil, imported into, and registered in the UK in 2017. It’s since had the full Danbury conversation treatment with leather interiors, kitchenette and a few extras added in such as the rock’n’roll bed, pop-top sleeping area and buddy seat. The subtle differences with the newer version of camper are that; it’s pretty much rust free and has anti-rust treatment in all of the key places, it has a newer water-cooled 1.4l VW Golf petrol engine (that means you can get above 50mph) and all electrics have been upgraded. If you’re classic VW enthusiast you’d notice that the bumpers are slightly different, and the spare wheel has been moved from the front of the campervan to the back.

HOW OLD DO I NEED TO BE TO DRIVE ONE OF YOUR CAMPERVANS?

Due to insurance restrictions, you need to be between the ages of 25 and 70 years old to drive one of our campervans.

ARE THE CAMPERVANS VANS EASY TO DRIVE?

It’s fair to say that campervans are a joy to drive and you’re not just renting a campervan, your joining a community. You don’t need a special licence to dive a campervan as they are classed as a standard vehicle and drive very much the same way as a car. The fundamental differences being the steering wheel and seating position are closer to the front wheels so you get a clearer view of the road and turning is more reactive. Also keep in mind that the campervan is heavier than a standard vehicle. When you arrive to collect the campervan, we’ll give you a full tour and show you how everything works, we’ll also provide advice on driving technique and can even take you for a quick lesson if you require. Driving a campervan is half the fun of the holiday!

WHAT ABOUT SEAT BELTS AND CHILD CAR SEATS/BOOSTER SEATS?

Our campervans can carry four people. The seating consists of two front seats with standard 3-point seatbelts and two rear seats with two lap belts. When traveling seatbelts must be worn at all times and we ask that you only carry as many people in the van as there are seatbelts. We do not provide car seats/booster seats for children but please feel free to bring your own if required. Please visit www.childcarseats.org.uk or www.gov.uk/child-car-seats-the-rules to understand your responsibilities and the law in this area.

HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN TRAVEL IN THE CAMPERVAN?

Our campervans have four seatbelts and two double beds so can carry in transit four people (See - WHAT ABOUT SEAT BELTS AND BABY SEATS?) and sleep four people comfortably.

DO I HAVE TO PAY A DEPOSIT TO BOOK?

The campervan hire booking form must be completed online or emailed to us with a non-refundable booking deposit of 25% (payable by Bank transfer or credit/debit card) to secure your reservation. On receipt of the booking form, the signed terms and conditions (or terms and conditions confirmed as agreed on our website), completed insurance form, your deposit and receipt of written or email confirmation from us, this contract will be initiated and reservation secured.

WHAT PAPERWORK DO I NEED TO BRING?

For insurance purposes we’ll require some information from you. Please email us at admin@socialcampers.co.uk, at least 7 days before the arrival date for all drivers intending to drive any of our campervans with the following details:

  • Driving license (showing your current address)
  • Two forms of address identification (i.e. bank statement or utility bill) which correspond to the address on your driving license (dated within the last 3 months).
  • National Insurance Number (for UK drivers only).

On the day of collection:

  • We’ll need to run a DVLA licence check to make sure this is still valid and activate the insurance policy, so please bring your licence/s (if multiple drivers) with you. If you would rather not bring this along, or if you forget this you can you can generate a 'check code' on the DVLA website, please visitwww.gov.uk/view-driving-licence).

  • Please bring a credit card with you so the security deposit (a pre-authorised holding payment) can be taken, this will then be released upon the return of the campervan after damage checks have been completed (normally processed on the same day).

Unfortunately, we won’t be able to release the campervan into your care without the above information so please ensure you have the all documentation to save on any delays on the day of collection.

WHEN DO I NEED TO PAY THE BALANCE FOR THE HIRE PERIOD?

The balancing payment (the original quoted price less deposit already paid) is due 28 days prior to the start of the rental. A security deposit of £500 is also payable (this is actually a pre-authorised holding payment that is taken and released back to you once the campervan has been returned and checked over for any damage). This can be paid on the day of collection via credit/debit card or the week leading up to the collection of the campervan via PayPal or Bank Transfer, we are unfortunately not able to take cheques as a holding deposit.

WHAT COUNTRIES CAN I DRIVE THE CAMPERVAN IN?

Currently to keep costs and insurances low we only allow our campervans to be driven within the UK Only. If you need a campervan for a trip further afield please do let us know.

DO I NEED MAINS ELECTRICITY?

It’s recommended but not essential and varies based on the length of your rental. The campervan is fitted with a 12v leisure battery and powers four domestic 3-pin (240v) plug sockets installed in the campervan, the LED lighting and fridge. This leisure battery is re-charged when the engine is running. If using power hungry devices such as hairdryers, heaters, etc. or staying in the same location for an extended period of time (without running the engine) we recommend you connect the campervan to mains electricity, a 14 metre electricity cable with a 16amp (standard campsite connection) is provided. We have also included a 16amp to a (household) 3-pin plug converter, so you can connect up to a standard domestic power socket if a 16amp supply isn’t available. Once hooked up to a mains supply you won’t have to worry about running down the leisure battery and will be able to use devices such as hairdryers, laptops and heaters* as you would do at home. *supplied in the campervan.

This does not include repairs to audio equipment. Please just keep the VAT receipt and hand this over to us on the completion of your hire (provided the hirer was not directly responsible for any damage). Repairs costing in excess of £50 must be authorised by us prior to the work being undertaken.
